about

"I pledge allegiance to cigarettes and booze." The Pledge is a subtle dig at American resentment, and how the habit of self-destruction and attraction to love ease the pain.

lyrics

well if you wanna get to know me take a drink in my shoes
24/7 365 blue
and i don't wanna go to heaven cuz there's nuthin ta do
i would rather have some fun and go to hell with you

cuz i have no faith in anything they say or do

i pledge allegiance to cigarettes and booze
i don't believe in pointless war jesus christ or W
i pledge allegiance to cigarettes and booze
it's the only thing that makes you feel better while they're killing you
and i don't care how just get me outta here

they told me you could be the president when i was a kid
but we're the first to have it harder than our fathers did
they use your freedom and religion as a means to the end
and you can fool me twice i swear we won't get fooled again

i have no faith in anything with everything

i pledge allegiance to cigarettes and booze
i don't believe the lies they tell you on the evening news
i pledge allegiance to cigarettes and booze
it's the only thing that makes you feel better while they're killing you

i could never love somebody else
she makes me feel so high
i keep a picture in my heart to get me by
when i'm lost and all by myself
she makes me feel so fine
she's the only one i'll ever love, she's mine, she's mine

there droppin bombs over bristol
good people live in the street
all in red like a coming attraction
you take what you want if you get what you need
i'm face down in the water

about

Merchants of Soul Bristol, Pennsylvania

The Merchants of Soul project comprised Jay Russell, Bob Enck, & Rod West. From 2004–2006, Jay & Rod tracked Break It Up on top of Bob's drum arrangements in the basement of a window factory in NJ.

Jay's untimely passing in 2019 prompted this revival & fresh treatment of the tunes. You can donate to Jay's children by sending checks payable to Karen Russell: P.O Box 1161, Bristol PA 19007.
