about

"Your eyes are closing, I think you better crawl it a night." Chicken outlines a dysfunctional relationship tainted by alcohol abuse. While "chickens" are never mentioned, the lyrics hint at the narrator's penchant for tolerating the pitfalls of a neglectful partner.

lyrics

you drinkin' wine all the time
bottle of red upside your head has got you talkin' outta time
to look see what you find
if there's a reason to be leavin' i'll be leavin' you tonight

you know you're throwin' it all away every night

you know it's a riot, you can do what you wanna tonight
but you don't wanna see me, you're eyes are closin'
i think you better crawl it a night

your faded looks and dirty signs
never undress me, not once undress me with your mind
spend the whole night kickin' my head around
who you think you're foolin' girl, we all know your eyes are brown

you know you're throwin' this heart away every night

you know it's a riot, you can do what you wanna tonight
but you don't wanna see me, you're eyes are closin'
i think you better crawl it a night

baby baby baby oh baby
don't walk out that door tonight
if you really love me like you say that you do
you'll stay at home and treat your man right
i can't hear what you whisper from under your breath
you got somethin' to say say it now
i just wanna love you babe

about

Merchants of Soul Bristol, Pennsylvania

The Merchants of Soul project comprised Jay Russell, Bob Enck, & Rod West. From 2004–2006, Jay & Rod tracked Break It Up on top of Bob's drum arrangements in the basement of a window factory in NJ.

Jay's untimely passing in 2019 prompted this revival & fresh treatment of the tunes. You can donate to Jay's children by sending checks payable to Karen Russell: P.O Box 1161, Bristol PA 19007.
